OffCamber optimization

OffCamber Autosport has extensive experience in all aspects of vehicle optimization.  We have 20 years of experience in testing and executing such work so that your vehicle will operate in peak efficiency

Our experts at OffCamber Autosport will work with you to determine the best, most cost effective enhancements to suit your driving needs. These upgrades can range from suspension tuning, to complete suspension replacement, to bolt on engine enhancements (Intake, exhaust, tuning, etc.) to complete motor rebuilds, or engine swaps. The key here is that “one” upgrade cannot rule them all. Effective enhancements for a daily driver may not be the same as a weekend toy.

One upgrade that many enthusiasts never consider is themselves. No matter what upgrades the car has, the limiting factor will always be the pilot. We have multiple ways to improve the most critical aspect of any vehicle, YOU!

Let’s plan out YOUR best path!

Suspension Tuning Overview

Suspension Tuning is a mystic art that

consists of 3 pillars:

Pillar 1 - Ride Height

Setting an optimal ride height is the first step to properly tuning a suspension.

Pillar 2 - corner Balance

In this step, our team will use our Wireless Longacre scales to adjust your corner weights.

Pillar 3-Flawless Alignment

The final step of tuning is to adjust the alignment of your suspension so that it performs optimally

Pillar 1 - setting optimal ride height.

Setting ride height is the critical first step in seeking suspension setup perfection. A number of different factors are taken into account when selecting the optimal ride height for any car such as:

  • Performance street car?

  • Daily driver?

  • Dual purpose car?

  • Does the car’s geometry require a rake? or a perfectly level setup?

  • Making the car as low as possible is not always the correct choice!

Suspension articulation, roll center, suspension geometry, and desired wheel alignment specifications are all factors that must be taken into account when selecting the correct ride height for your vehicle. Our team will work with you to determine the optimal ride height for your car. Once initial ride height has been selected, we move on to the next step, which is Corner Balancing.

Pillar 2 - Corner Balance

Many folks spend a lot of money on a fancy suspension, but never invest in having the suspension tuned. Does your car turn better to the right than the left? If this is the case, then your car is out of balance!

Corner balancing is the art of adjusting the “weight” each wheel carries to ensure the car is as even as possible. Have you ever heard of “50 / 50 weight distribution”?

The goal is to have perfectly even weight distribution Right to Left, and Front to Rear, allowing the car to move consistently in all directions. The equation is::

LF RF
— = —
LR RR

In order to achieve the optimum balance, our team uses a set of Longacre digital wireless scales, special software, and experience to tweak the suspension until we are as close to perfection as your car will allow.

The image below is one of the pieces of software that we use. It shows how much weight each of the corners is bearing, as well as the cross weights.

Once balance has been achieved, we move on to the final step to handling Nirvana, the Flawless Alignment!

Pillar 3 - Flawless alignment

The final step in handling Nirvana is a meticulous, flawless wheel alignment. We can align your car to manufacturer’s (BMW, Audi, Porsche, Lexus, Subaru, etc.) recommended values or we can work with you to design a custom set of alignment specifications based on your unique driving needs. Once we determine the appropriate specifications for your car, our technicians will then put our Hunter Hawkeye alignment machine into action and will take the appropriate care and time to use all of the adjustability that your suspension allows in order to achieve our famous “Flawless Alignment”. . Your car will carve corners like it never has before!

Suspension Upgrades

If you really want to get the most out of your car, suspension is hands down the best way to achieve this! The magic comes from selecting the appropriate mix of:

  • Springs

  • Dampers (struts/shocks)

  • Camber plates

  • Control arms

  • Suspension Bushings

  • 3 pillars (See Above)

Once you put all of this together, your car will be absolutely transformed.

OffCamber is proud to offer options from H&R, Eibach, Hypercoil, Koni, Bilstein, MCS, JRZ, Moton, Ground Controls, KW, etc.

We will work with you to determine if you are better off with OEM style spring / damper combination, or a complete coil over solution. (No, coil overs are not always the best choice!).

Once the correct components are selected, our team will expertly install and tune your new suspension.

Engine enhancements

Engine optimization

We have a wide variety of options to optimize your engine. The classic theory still valid, the more cold dense air that is pumped into the motor, and the easier it is for the motor to expel those gases, the more efficient the engine will be. The magic comes from understanding the appropriate ways to execute this theory for your particular engine.

We break down these upgrades into 3 stages.

Stage 1- External Bolt-ons

Stage 2-Engine external optimization (Efficiency)

Stage 3- Engine Internal optimization (Engine builds)

Stage 3 - Engine Internal optimization

Stage 3 is where we get serious about maximum efficiency. At this level we are delving deep into the engine to improve efficiency (Lighter weight components, polishing to reduce friction, etc.), add displacement, and possibly forced induction, all of the way to complete re-builds.

o   Head Work (Porting / Polishing)

o   Balancing / Blueprinting

o   Adding Displacement

o   Forged Internals

o   Forced induction (Turbo & Supercharger)

o   Full re-builds

What is ECU Tuning?

_DSC0059 (2).jpg

General Overview

If you are looking to improve the efficiency of your vehicle, one of the most effective mods you can do is an ECU tune. Most vehicles come “under-tuned” from the factory. This can be for multiple reasons:

  • Safety requirements

  • Staying well below the mechanical limits of the engine / key components of your vehicle

  • Marketing placement of the vehicle

ECU tuning involves changing a number of parameters in your engine control systems including:

  • Spark timing

  • Air/fuel maps

  • Camshaft timing

  • Turbo Boost

These parameters are adjusted to allow the engine to run at it’s maximum safe efficiency.

There are multiple Tuning routes:

  • Canned Tunes” - These are pre-written tunes that were written for your model of car, with the modifications that you specify. This is the way to go for a lightly modified car.

  • “Custom Tunes” - These are tunes that one of our tuners will write for the specific modifications on your car using data logs, and/or dyno runs to collect the necessary data from your specific car. This tune will be unique for your car.

Canned Tunes

Canned tunes (also called ‘Off-the-Shelf’) are maps that tuners have created for standard enhancements for a particular car.

Companies like RaceChips, APR, Dinan are some examples of companies that provide these ‘base maps’, which clients can purchase from a certified dealer.

These standard maps consist of fuel tables, ignition tables, etc. matched to your current engine configuration. The hope is the tuner has worked with many cars like yours, and knows a safe range for these values in order to give you the efficiency gains that you are looking for.

This is why it is important to work with a tuner that you know has the experience and knowledge about your platform.

If you are going to keep the level of enhancements to your vehicle to a minimum, a canned tune is a cost effective way to get some nice gains.

The tunes are generally “flashed” at the certified dealer.

However, if you are looking for serious efficiency enhancements, then continue reading to the custom tune section.

F30 BMW Sedan on the Dyno

 What is a custom tune?

As mentioned in the above section, if you move past simple “bolt-on” enhancements, and are looking for more serious efficiency gains, you will also need to move into the world of Custom / Dyno tuning.

In this space, you have added much more serious enhancements to your car involving airflow, fuel, etc. In order for you to take the most advantage of these physical upgrades, we need to create a custom map / tune for the car.

The Process (Simplified):

  • Step 1 - The car has to be put on a dyno

  • Step 2 - Run the car on the dyno to collect data elements.

  • Step 3 - The tuner reads the data, makes changes to the map, and tests the results of these changes.

  • Repeat Step 2 & 3 until the tuner is happy with the results.

The interesting thing is that 2 of the exact same cars with the same changes may require a slightly different map.

The tuner uses various software packages to make changes to a variety of data in the map such as: air, fuel, ignition timing, throttle response, etc. to maximize your vehicles efficiency. This process may take several hours, and if there are issues with the engine, several days to complete the process.

As you can imagine, with the software, dyno time, and tuner’s time to make all of these changes, these types of tunes are not in-expensive. If you have spent a bunch of $$$ on engine mods, then this piece of the project will be well worth it.
